31. Crushed Velvet

As is typical in fashion, another one of this season's trends bursting back from the depths of the fashion merry-go-round of days gone by has surfaced.

Velvet is back. I can hear you now - 'Oh no, not that awful trend! Didn't that die out in the 60's?'

However,  before you go fleeing in horror, fret not my dears. We're not talking awful crushed velvet with a batwing sleeve, and god-awful shaping that leaves you resembling a bag of rubbish, oh no!

Think jewel colours, clinched in at the waste circa Mad Men's Joan Harris or a sexy shift dress, Jean Shrimpton style gracing everything from the obligatory Christmas party, festive drinks with friends to family dinners with great auntie Edna this holiday season.

It's a guilty pleasure of mine. I distinctly remember running around the lounge one Christmas as a child in a black crushed velvet dress with a pretty lace collar.

I've picked out four of what I think are the best Velvet Dresses out at the moment.

First up is this gorgeous smoky blue ASOS. I love the cut of this dress, and the details on the sleeves give it an interesting feature to focus on.

Next we're going full length with Biba at the House of Fraser. This berry coloured dress is so elegant in it's simplicity and cut. A definite winner.
Toast is going sexy with this kingfisher velvet shift. It's going to be a definite staple for all Toast fanatics, looking for something chic and easy to wear! Add a skinny belt in homage to Fendi to keep it interesting. I think I may just have to get myself one!
Last up, Oasis are rocking a ladylike 1950s cut, with a stunning deep v neck cut, and pretty ruched sleeves. Lovely.

I myself have got in on the velvet trend - I found a vintage evening coat in a second hand shop when I was last in London. My mother kindly bought it to contribute to my oh so fashionable life. It's going to be perfect for throwing over a statement dress! (EDIT:I will post a picture once I'm back at uni)

So what do you think dear ones? Will you be embracing velvet?

Ciao Cherubs!x

  1. I find it funny that two of my least favorite trends, Velvet and animal print came back with a vengeance at the same time. I'm still in need of more convincing for both :/
